Northumbrian Woodland Burials is based near to a former ww2 airfield in the heart of Northumberland. 35 acres of land has been planted out with indigenous trees, six acres of which is to be used for Green Burials. Bockenfield wood will be made up of mostly Oak and Ash trees with a sprinkling of Pines for future red squirrel feedings. Burials will be commencing in November 2001 after further planting of trees and hedgerows has taken place. A large pond is under construction at the side of the nearby Blackbrook stream which flows to the south of the woodland burial ground.

The area benefits from the original roads constructed by the RAF in 1943 and has five circular aircraft parking blisters which are to be retained and used for picnic areas. Planning permission was granted in July 2001 and there are initially 3000 graves available.

Cardboard coffins are strongly encouraged and headstones forbidden. An A4 flat remembrance plaque will be allowed and a small bronze plaque may be placed on the stone sheepfold wall.

The burial area is to have a covenant placed on it, which will forbid future felling of the trees. This will mean that the graves purchased are forever. The key aim of Northumbrian Woodland Burials is to simply create permanent woodland, which cannot be removed.

There will be four different areas of the burial area, they are;

An area that will be left as a wild grass area to the far west of the woodland burial area. Important for bird nesting and wild flower growth. May be of interest for burial of ashes also.

An area where burials take place and trees planted randomly at the correct time of year.

Each grave will have a dedicated tree planted a few weeks after the interment. (These trees will be subject to necessary thinning some years after).

This area will be used for the double graves that may be side by side or one on top of the other. A shrub or similar plant will be planted and replaced by a tree on the second burial.

Only indigenous trees will be allowed and will be limited to the following native broadleaf trees.

  • Oak (Quercus rober)
  • Ash (Fraxinus excelsior)
  • Rowan (Sorbus aucuparia)
  • Holly (Ilex aquifolium)

No other trees will be allowed as the above species will compliment and expand Bockenfield Wood. After standard forestry management, the wooded area will be left to nature to develop as a natural woodland. The overhead canopy of the trees should provide adequate cover for weed control. You must remember that trees are living things and must be treated with respect and care. At times it will not always be acceptable to transplant trees to a grave if the weather conditions are not suitable. In this instance shrubs or temporary plants may be used as an alternative. Furthermore in the distant future it will be necessary to thin out some of the trees otherwise they will become stunted and not reach there natural beauty.

Biodegradable coffins are only to be used with Cardboard coffins strongly recommended and can be supplied by Northumbrian Woodland Burials.
