green burials

Northumbrian Woodland Burials is to be located at Bockenfield Wood, which at the moment is a working pasture and barley field. A comprehensive tree planting scheme is planned for the Autumn and some six acres will be used for green woodland burials.

The entire site covers 34 acres of what was formerly a world war II airfield. Planning permission to turn the area in a woodland burial ground was granted in July 2001 and the works needed for the burials to take place should take some 12 months. When completed the burial area will be split into four zones, Wild Meadow Area, Woodland planting area, Woodland burial area and a Double grave area, more can be found out about these zones here. Bockenfield Woods will also have designated picnic area's and a large pond is under construction at the side of the nearby Blackbrook stream which flows to the south of the woodland burial ground.
